What is included in a crewed yacht charter?
The charter fee covers the yacht, her captain and crew, their wages, the yacht’s insurance and the design of your itinerary. Fuel, berthing, food, drink and harbour dues are not included — they are paid from the APA. Gratuity is separate and discretionary.
On a yacht between roughly 12 and 40 metres the crew numbers two to six: captain, deckhand, hostess and, above about 30 metres, a private chef. They are multilingual, they know the harbours and the beach clubs, and they are on board for the week — which is the part that separates a charter from a boat rental. Tenders, paddleboards and the usual water toys come with the yacht; jet skis and diving gear sometimes do not, so ask.
What sits outside the fee is everything that varies with how you use the boat. A week spent at anchor off Cap-Ferrat consumes a fraction of the fuel of a week that runs to Portofino and back. A table of twelve ordering Provençal rosé is not the same APA as a table of twelve ordering something older. This is why the APA is a float rather than a price: you are charged what the week actually costs.
Before departure the crew send a preference sheet — dietary requirements, allergies, favourite wines, how early anyone wants breakfast, whether there are children aboard. Filling it in properly is the single highest-return thirty minutes of the whole charter.
