How far ahead should I book a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix?
Decide in the autumn and confirm over the winter. Trackside berths on Port Hercule are effectively allocated by January for a race at the end of May, and the best of them are held by returning clients from one year to the next, so they never reach an open market at all.
The scarce thing is the berth, not the yacht. There are plenty of beautiful boats on this coast in late May; there is a fixed and small number of positions from which you can see the harbour chicane. That is why a Grand Prix quote has three lines — yacht, berth, weekend — and why the second one moves more than the other two.
An enquiry in March is not too late to be on the water, but it is usually too late for the front row. April brings occasional cancellations and re-lets, and a yacht one row back with clear sightlines makes a far better weekend than a grandstand seat, so it is always worth asking even when the calendar looks unhelpful.
The parts that can safely wait are the guest list, the catering and the tender schedule; those move until a few weeks out. The berth cannot move at all.
